Who can apply?

The EMLE is a postgraduate course. Preference will be given to applicants who already have a first master degree.

The minimum requirement for admission is a bachelor degree, provided that this degree leads up to employability in the relevant labour market. In particular with respect to the legal profession, stricter job qualifying criteria (first master degree) may be required by national regulations.

Applicants with a bachelor degree only need to provide proof that this degree is an appropriate level of qualification in the labour market in their home country.

Besides graduates in Law or Economics, students with a first degree in Business Administration or in other social sciences may also apply if the curriculum includes a substantial number of courses in law and/or economics. The above requirement with respect to employability in the labour market equally applies.

No student may apply to more than three Erasmus Mundus courses in any given year.

Application Procedure

The application procedure differs depending on whether an applicant is considered a ‘European student’ or ‘third country student’ in accordance with the criteria of the European Union (the official definition of ‘third country students’ is available at the Erasmus Mundus website). European students are those who either

  • have a passport of an EU Member State or of the EEA-EFTA states (Iceland, Liechtenstein, Norway), or
  • have carried out their main activities (studies, work, etc) for more than a total of 12 months over the last five years in any of the above countries.

All applicants who are characterized by neither of the above conditions are considered as third country students.

Note that students with multiple nationalities who are citizens of one of the countires listed in the definition, as well as of a non-European country, and who have not spent 12 months in Europe may choose whether they want to apply as European or as third country students.

Please proceed to the application procedure for the academic year 2011/2012:

European students (deadline December 15, 2010 - procedure open soon)

Third country students  (deadline November 15, 2010 - procedure open)

"This LL.M. is definitely a first-class Master. Thanks to a nice, accessible and high calibre faculty coming from all over Europe and abroad, as well as very bright students fellows, the EMLE programme is though-provoking and pushes for students to continuously score off. In this respect, the programme is very challenging academically.

Last but not least, beyond a strong academic interest for this programme, this year was culturally one of the richest of my life. Indeed,  I had the great opportunity to travel and study between three European countries and meet wonderful students from all over the world  whith whom I built strong friendships.

Even before finishing the LL.M., I was offered the opportunity to pursue a Ph.D in European Law and Economics at the University of Paris II, an opportunity that I was happy to accept."
