19.11.2009: Special Lecture at MPI Hamburg

The Hamburg EMLE Students visited the Max Planck Institute for Comparative and International Private Law (MPI) for the special lecture event “Foundations and Perspectives of Comparative Law” on 17th November 2009. Following a brief introduction to the work of the MPI, Hannes Rösler, Senior Research Fellow at the MPI, delivered a presentation on the foundations and perspectives of comparative legal research with special regard to the history of the MPI, its current research projects and the links between comparative legal research and law & economics. A short movie on the work of the MPI (MPI Movie) underpinned his presentation. The event closed with a presentation on the institute’s library and a guided tour by Holger Knudsen, Director of the MPI Library. Participants and speakers continued their discussion over dinner at a restaurant close by. The joint EMLE/MPI lecture event is an integrated module of the EMLE first term course “Foundations of Law and Economics: The Comparative Legal Perspective” taught by Patrick C. Leyens.

07.10.2009: EMLE in the news

This editorial of Prof. Thomas Eger has been published in the September 29th 2008 edtion of Newsweek.

Postgraduate studies have become an almost indispensable supplement to university education for the new generation of legal professionals. Within the last few decades the demand for Master of Laws (LL.M.) programmes has increased immensely. US universities were long seen as the market leaders in high quality postgraduate legal education. Although offered at considerably lower fees, Master Programmes in Europe stand for equally high quality. High standards can be expected of programmes which receive funding from accepted institutions. Telling from my own experience, the European Commission sets particularly high standards under the Erasmus Mundus project.

05.08.2009: EMLE selected for Erasmus Mundus II

We are very pleased to announce that the EMLE programme has been selected for the second round of the European Commission's Erasmus Mundus initiative (EM II). This signifies another five years of financial support from the Commission for researchers and students, besides being a great recognition of the EMLE programme's qualities in teaching and organisation.
EMLE was one of the first master programmes to be selected for Erasmus Mundus support in 2004 and has since benefited from generous student grants. Funding under EM II will enable even greater financial support for European students, while grants for third country students will continue to be available. As a further consequence of the selection for EM II, the EMLE consortium of universities will change in compostion as of the academic year 2010/2011. The University of Manchester will no longer participate, while the Warsaw School of Economics (Poland) and the Indira Gandhi Institute of Development Research (Mumbai, India) will join the network. The University of Haifa, currently EMLE's non-European partner university, will become a full consortium member.
We are furthermore delighted that the European Doctorate Programme in Law and Economics (EDLE) has also been accepted for support from Erasmus Mundus as of 2010. Each year, some of the top graduates from EMLE continue their studies in Law and Economics at PhD level in the EDLE programme. Thus, together EMLE and EDLE are now in a position to offer comprehensive first-class postgraduate education in Law and Economics with the valuable support of the Erasmus Mundus programme.

19.11.2008: Scholarships for applicants from EU membership candidate states

The European Commission has informed us that for the application for the academic year 2009-2010, students from the candidate countries for accession to the EU (currently Croatia, Macedonia, Turkey) are regarded as third country students, rather than as European students, as in previous years. This implies that students from these countries:
- are now eligible for an Erasmus Mundus scholarship but must also pay the tuition fees for third country students, and
- must follow the application procedure for third country students. Important: The deadline for application is December 15, 2008.

"The EMLE program is a unique chance to broaden one's focus and to dive into interdisciplinary research. Having studied political science before, I wanted to learn more about the economic rationales behind the rules that are governing our everyday life as well as about the potentials to improve them. My expectations were more than fulfilled! With the new tools at hand I was able to start a Ph.D. program at the International Max Planck Research School for Competition and Innovation.

Apart from the outstanding academic quality of the program I cannot think of a better way to get to know energetic people from all around the world. Sitting in a Hamburg dorm and enjoying dinner in a 20sqm kitchen with friends from Italy, Russia, Mexico, Bangladesh, India, China, the Netherlands, Belgium, Brazil, Ireland, Israel, Taiwan and Argentina is what makes the EMLE program an experience of a lifetime."
