Erasmus Mundus
The European Master in Law and Economics (EMLE) has been recognized as an Erasmus Mundus Masters Course, both under the first edition of Erasmus Mundus (2004-2008) as under Erasmus Mundus II (2009-2013). The Programme was very positively evaluated by a panel of independent academic experts and in the first round in 2004 it was chosen by the Selection Committee out of 128 proposals. In this first round only 19 Masters Programmes received the Erasmus Mundus label. The Master in Law and Economics is the only Masters Course in Economics and one of two Erasmus Mundus Courses in the legal discipline. In 2002 the EMLE Programme was already selected to take part in the Joint Masters Project of the European University Association.
The European Master in Law and Economics is offered by a consortium of seven universities: Erasmus University Rotterdam (co-ordinating institution), University of Hamburg, University of Bologna, University of Gent, University of Aix-Marseille, Victoria University of Manchester and University of Vienna. As of the academic year 2010-2011, the Victoria University of Manchester will no longer participate, but the University of Warsaw, the University of Haifa and the Indira Gandhi Institute of Development Research from Mumbai will join the consortium. The students who participate in the EMLE Programme will receive degrees from all the universities where they spend a term. This means that students will receive double or triple degrees, depending on their allocation. All degrees are officially recognized in all countries involved.
The EMLE-Mundus Masters Course is designed to provide students with advanced knowledge in the Economic Analysis of Law: the use of economic methods to explain and assess the effects of divergent legal rules. Since differences between national laws have been at the core of European policy making, the EMLE-Mundus Masters Course offers unique value concerning the EU's central ambitions.
