Coordinator

Prof. Dr. Bouckaert is a professor at the Law School of Ghent University. He is the Director of the Department of Legal Theory and President of the European School for Law and Economics. He has been Visiting professor in Law and Economics at the universities of Paris IX, Aix-Marseille and Montpellier. He lectured for the Institute for Humane Studies, Fairfax, Virginia, USA.
His main fields of interest are the economic analysis and the history of property law, the theory of sources of law and zoning law. Moreover, he was the Director of the ERASMUS-Programme in Law and Economics from 1989 until 1994. He is also co-editor of the Encyclopedia of Law and Economics.

Teaching Staff

Dr. Johan Albrecht is a post-doctoral researcher at the Faculty of Economics and Business Administration of Ghent University. His recent research concentrates on international economics, environmental policy and technology assessments.
He is editor of 'Instruments for Climate Policy. Limited versus Unlimited Flexibility' (Edward Elgar Pub., 2002) and author of 'Biotechnology and Genetic Engineering. Between Hype and Hysteria' (Standaard, 2000).

Prof. Gerrit De Geest is a Professor at the Washington University, St. Louis, USA. He specializes in comparative law and in law and economics. He was a professor of law and economics at Utrecht University in the Netherlands (2000-2007) and the University of Ghent (1997-2000). He was a president of the European Association of Law and Economics and a member of the Economic Impact Group of the Common Principles of European Contract Law. He is co-editor of the Review of Law and Economics and consultant editor of the European Review of Contract Law. He has published numerous books and articles in the fields of economic analysis of contract law, tort law, and comparative law.

Prof. Dr. Ben Depoorter (EMLE) is Professor of Law at the Center for Advanced Studies in Law and Economics at Ghent University and Visiting Professor at George Mason University Law School. Ben Depoorter is a recipient of BAEF and Fulbright fellowships.
Ben Depoorter has authored thirty papers in the field of law and economics, intellectual property law, comparative law and recently co-authored The Law and Economics of the European Union (Lexis, 2003). He currently serves as Co-Editor of the Review of Law and Economics (The Berkeley Electronic Press Journals).

Prof. Dr. Frank Van Dun is Professor of Philosophy of Law at Ghent University and Limburg (Maastricht, The Netherlands). He is the author of 'The fundamental principle of rights, an essay on the foundations of law', and of numerous articles on political and social philosophy and logic.

EUA Joint Masters Programme

This project of the European University Association analysed the possibilities of joint degree programmes in Europe as innovative examples of inter-university cooperation and as pillars of the future European higher education development. EMLE was among the eleven programmes that were selected for this pilot project.

Accreditation by NVAO and ZEvA

In August 2004, the EMLE programme in Rotterdam and Ghent was accredited by the NVAO, the Dutch Flemish Accreditation Agency. The NVAO is the official agency in the Netherlands and Flanders to certify that a programme meets the quality criteria as formulated by the Dutch and Flemish government.
In February 2005 the EMLE programme in Hamburg was accredited by the ZEvA, the Central Accreditation Agency of the Federal State of Lower Saxony. The ZEvA is one of the official agencies in Germany to certify that a programme fulfils the national German quality standards set by the German Conference of the Ministers of Education.

The Erasmus Mundus programme is a co-operation and mobility programme in the field of higher education. It aims to enhance quality in European higher education and to promote intercultural understanding through co-operation with third countries. The programme is intended to strengthen European co-operation and international links in higher education by supporting high-quality European Masters Courses, by enabling students and visiting scholars from around the world to engage in postgraduate study at European universities, as well as by encouraging the outgoing mobility of European students and scholars towards third countries.
